Will ChatGPT Recommend Your Business? AI Search for Maine Owners

By Jeremy Lizzotte · June 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Something changed quietly over the last couple of years: people started asking AI assistants like ChatGPT for recommendations. “What is a good roofer in Bangor?” “Best wedding venue in central Maine?” If that is where some of your customers are now looking, the obvious question is — will the AI recommend you?

How AI decides who to recommend

AI assistants do not make things up out of thin air (at least, they are not supposed to). When they recommend a local business, they are pulling from what they can find about you online: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and mentions of you on other sites. In other words — a lot of the same signals that matter for regular Google, plus a few new ones.

How to be the answer

  • Have clear, plain-language content. AI reads your website the way a person skims it. Pages that clearly state what you do, where you do it, and who you serve are easy for it to understand and repeat.
  • Use structured data. Behind-the-scenes markup that tells machines “this is a business, here is its name, location, and services” makes you far easier for AI to pick up. Good sites include this automatically.
  • Keep a strong Google Business Profile and reviews. These are prime sources AI leans on for local recommendations.
  • Get mentioned elsewhere. Being listed and linked on other real websites — directories, partners, local pages — reinforces that you exist and are legit.

The new file that helps: llms.txt

There is even an emerging standard — a small file called llms.txt — that gives AI systems a clean summary of your site and what matters on it. It is early days, but it is a simple, forward-looking edge, and every site we build includes one.

The good news

If you do the fundamentals right for Google, you are most of the way to being AI-friendly too. Clear content, structured data, a solid Google Business Profile, reviews, and a few real mentions cover both. This is exactly what we build in from the start — a fast, clearly-written, properly-marked-up site for a $300 flat fee.

Bottom line: AI recommendations are becoming the new word of mouth. The businesses that show up are the ones with clear websites, good structured data, strong profiles, and real reviews. Get those right and you will be the answer — whether the question goes to Google or to ChatGPT.
