Squarespace, Wix, or a Custom Maine Website? An Honest Comparison

By Jeremy Lizzotte · July 2, 2026 · 6 min read

If you have looked into getting a website, you have run into Squarespace and Wix. They advertise everywhere, and they are genuinely capable tools. So let us be honest about when they make sense — and when they do not — for a Maine small business.

The case for DIY builders

Squarespace and Wix are drag-and-drop website builders. If you have the time and patience, you can build a decent-looking site yourself. The upside:

  • You are in full control and can tweak it anytime.
  • The templates look modern out of the box.
  • Hosting is built in.

The catch nobody mentions upfront

Two things surprise most business owners:

  • The monthly fee never stops. Squarespace and Wix run roughly $16–$49 a month, forever. Over three years that is $600–$1,700 — for a site you built yourself.
  • “Drag and drop” still takes real time. Between writing the words, sizing photos, and fighting the layout, a first site usually eats a weekend or three. That is time you are not spending running your business.

And because everyone starts from the same templates, a lot of DIY sites end up looking like… everyone else’s DIY site.

The done-for-you option

The other route is to have someone build it for you. The old objection was price — Maine agencies charge $2,000–$5,000 — but that math has changed. We build custom small-business sites for a $300 flat fee, one time, and you see a working mockup before you pay anything. No monthly builder subscription, no weekend lost to a template, no “does this look generic?” second-guessing.

So which should you pick?

Honestly: if you enjoy tinkering and have the time, a DIY builder can absolutely work. But if you would rather have a professional site that is done right, done fast, and does not cost you a Saturday or a recurring bill — done-for-you wins for most owners we talk to.

Bottom line: Squarespace and Wix are fine tools for people with time to spend. If you would rather spend that time on your business and just have a great site show up, a flat-fee custom build is the simpler, and often cheaper, path.
