Getting Found on Google: Local SEO Basics for Maine Businesses
By Jeremy Lizzotte · June 11, 2026 · 7 min read
“SEO” sounds like a dark art, but local SEO — showing up when someone nearby searches for what you do — comes down to a handful of fundamentals. Get these right and you’ll outrank competitors who never bothered.
1. Claim your Google Business Profile
This is the free listing that puts you on Google Maps and in the local “map pack” at the top of search results. Claim it, fill in every field — hours, service area, phone, photos — and keep it accurate. For many Maine trades, this single step is the biggest source of new calls.
2. Be consistent with your NAP
NAP means Name, Address, Phone. Google cross-checks these across your website, your Google profile, Facebook, and directories. If your phone number is formatted three different ways in three places, it weakens your ranking. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
3. Put your town and service on the page
Google can’t rank you for “Waterville deck builder” if those words never appear on your site. Your homepage, headings, and page titles should name what you do and where you do it — naturally, not stuffed. A page titled “Deck Building in Waterville, Maine” will always beat a vague “Welcome to Our Site.”
4. Build a page for each town you serve
If you cover Bangor, Brewer, Orono, and Old Town, one generic “service area” paragraph won’t cut it. A dedicated landing page for each town — with that town’s name in the title, heading, and content — lets you rank for searches in every community you serve. This is one of the highest-leverage moves in local SEO, and it’s built into every site we make.
5. Earn reviews — and respond to them
Reviews are both a ranking factor and a trust factor. Ask happy customers for a Google review (a simple text with the link works), and reply to every one, good or bad. A steady trickle of recent reviews tells Google you’re active and tells customers you’re reliable.
6. Make sure your site is fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on a phone. Google knows it, and it ranks slow, clunky mobile sites lower. A fast, mobile-first site isn’t just nicer for visitors — it’s a direct ranking advantage.
Where most Maine businesses fall short
The Google Business Profile is usually fine. Where they lose is the website: no town pages, weak titles, slow on mobile, no schema markup. That’s the gap we close by default — every $300 site ships with proper page titles, schema, a sitemap, mobile-first speed, and per-town landing pages from day one.
You don’t need to chase every SEO trick. Nail these basics, stay consistent, and keep your profile and reviews fresh — that’s how local businesses win local searches in Maine.
